H10x Partner Spotlight 🔦 TGI: The George Institute for Global Health
Author: K. Phillips, Senior Manager (Ideas)
Today, we spotlight an organisation at the forefront of global health innovation: The George Institute for Global Health (TGI), known for its pioneering work across continents. I had the enlightening opportunity to speak with Cydonie Greenaway, the Program Manager at TGI, who shared invaluable insights about the organisation's mission and worldwide impact.
Before I begin, let me tell you a bit about the picture above. The award shown was from the UNSW Founders Gala Dinner and awards night in October 2023, where we recognised the exceptional dedication and invaluable support of partners who have forged enduring and impactful relationships with the UNSW community. At this event, we inducted The George Institute for Global Health into the UNSW Founders Hall of Fame, a partner who has consistently demonstrated their commitment to the growth and success of the university's entrepreneurial endeavours through long-term collaborations.
TGI taught us to apply “Global Impact” lenses in everything we do. In 2018, they had a long-term vision of achieving more impact through entrepreneurship. They convinced us to run a "risky experiment" by launching an industry-specific accelerator program in addition to the flagship agnostic 10x Accelerator we launched a year before. This experimental program currently thrives, but the outcome is much more significant. Simply put, we would not be running five accelerator streams today (All Industries, Health, Biotech, Climate & Defence) if this partner had not envisioned it in 2018.
Their unwavering support, be it through funding, resources, mentorship, or advocacy, through the COVID pandemic and beyond, has significantly contributed to developing ground-breaking ideas and startups. It allowed us to provide tailored support to startups developing solutions for global health challenges with the mission of saving millions of lives globally.
Cydonie, a driving force at TGI, brings extensive experience in managing health programs that address non-communicable diseases and injuries, particularly in disadvantaged populations. Under her leadership, TGI has been instrumental in executing strategies that deliver on its promise of better health outcomes globally.
TGI is dedicated to improving health worldwide, especially among the most vulnerable. Their mission is clear: challenge the status quo and introduce innovative, preventative, and treatment methodologies for chronic diseases and injuries, focusing particularly on underserved communities.
Looking ahead, TGI is focused on leading transformative clinical trials, engaging with local communities to understand and meet their health priorities, and developing affordable, innovative health solutions. It aims to profoundly impact healthcare practices and policies worldwide, ensuring sustainable health improvements.
Startups in the health and medical sector often face daunting paths to commercialisation. TGI, through its partnerships with UNSW Founders and other institutions, runs the Health 10x Accelerator. This program empowers startups by providing the essential business acumen, market strategies, and clinical validation needed to thrive in the competitive health sector.
TGI is expanding its reach and adjusting its focus to address more specific health challenges through initiatives like the Centre for Sex and Gender Equity in Health and Medicine. This initiative aims to tackle the sex and gender biases significantly affecting health outcomes.
For new startups looking to join the Health 10x Accelerator, Cydonie advises focusing on clearly defining the unmet global health need and demonstrating how your solution can effectively address this gap.
As we wrap up our discussion, it's clear that The George Institute for Global Health remains at the forefront of global health innovation, continually pushing boundaries and pioneering significant advancements. Their commitment to addressing urgent health issues through rigorous research, active community involvement, and innovative commercialisation strategies is an inspiring model for others in the field.
