Kirsty Máté, New Waver and the founder of The ReDress Hub, suggests considering ‘slow shopping’ gift ideas this xmas!

Alum of the New Wave Program, Kirsty Máté, has just launched The ReDress Hub , a clothing sustainability hub in Launceston, Tasmania. As part of Tasmania's Great Regional City Challenge, The ReDress Hub is a physical and virtual space where local clothing retailers, designers, and consumers can come together to find new ways to use, reuse, restyle, share, and repair clothing.

The ReDress Hub aims to address the environmental and social impacts of the fast fashion industry by promoting the circular economy. By encouraging the reuse and repair of clothing, The ReDress Hub hopes to reduce waste and extend the lifespan of clothing, thereby reducing the demand for new clothing production.

In addition to providing a space for collaboration and learning, The ReDress Hub will also offer resources and support for local clothing businesses to transition to more sustainable practices. This includes educational workshops, resources for repairing and restyling clothing, and access to a network of experts in the field.

The ReDress Hub is a welcome addition to the Tasmania community and is sure to have a positive impact on both the local economy and the environment. By fostering collaboration and innovation, The ReDress Hub is helping to create a more sustainable future for fashion.

As the holiday season approaches, many of us are looking for gift ideas for our loved ones. If you're looking for something a little more sustainable, then look no further than "slow shopping" – the act of buying and gifting items that are thoughtfully produced and meant to last.

Kirsty’s slow shopping tips:

“Christmas is the time of year we consume the most - from food to tinsel and everything in between… so our first tip is to question yourself each time you buy something this Xmas…

Q1: Why am I buying this - do I actually need it or just want it?

If you need it…

Q2: Is this the most sustainable solution for this product or are there other options I can explore?

Q3: Is there a secondhand or reusable option so I don’t have to buy new?

Q4: Can I support local businesses with my purchase?

Q5: Is this product going to create more waste to landfill?”
