From PFC to Vogue: Alinta’s Journey in Biotech Innovation
Breaking into the Startup World
In 2019, Alinta had no plans to become a startup founder. A biotech student with her sights set on patent law, she had mapped out a stable career path—until a chance opportunity with the Peter Farrell Cup (PFC) changed everything.
“I didn’t think startups could be a viable career for me. I was going to do a PhD, then move into patent law. But my heart wasn’t in it.”
Then came PFC. Encouraged by a friend, she and her team pitched Aurora, an idea for rapid diagnostic tests, at a time when rapid testing wasn’t widely used.
“We entered just for fun—we had no expectations. But when we made the top 10 and eventually placed second, it was a huge moment of validation. It made me realise I could actually build something real.”
This experience reshaped her career path, leading her towards biotech entrepreneurship and setting the stage for her future ventures.
From PFC to Synbiote: Transforming Waste into Innovation
While Aurora, focused on STI diagnostics, Alinta’s next big step came with Synbiote, a deep-tech startup developing biomaterials for industrial applications. Unlike Aurora, Synbiote was a completely new venture with a different team, but the core mission remained the same—applying biotechnology to real-world challenges.
“Every company I’ve worked on may be different, but the core idea has always been the same: bringing biotech innovation out of the lab and into the real world.”
Her passion for biotech started much earlier. At just 15 years old, a sliding doors moment changed everything.
“I was meant to meet a physics professor at a university work experience program, but he was sick. Instead, they sent me to a biotech professor’s lab. He showed me how they were using plants to filter pollution, and I was hooked. That was my ‘aha’ moment—I knew biotech was what I wanted to do.”
Testing the Team Before Scaling Up
Before founding Synbiote as it is today, Alinta and her team launched Sörzero, a non-alcoholic beverage brand, as a way to pressure-test their working dynamic.
“We wanted to see if we could successfully work together to bring a product to market. It was like a pressure test before taking it further with Synbiote.”
And the results spoke for themselves:
✅ From concept to market in 150 days—80% faster than industry average
✅ Turned a profit in just 120 days—when most beverage brands initially operate at a loss
The experience validated their teamwork, proving they had the right foundation for what was next —Synbiote.
Accelerators, Mentorship & the Power of Community
Alinta has participated in PFC, Health 10x, and HCF Catalyst, each time tackling different problems with different ventures. But the biggest lesson remained the same:
“Your idea will evolve, but your team is what stays constant. That’s why finding the right people is everything.”
She credits mentorship and networks as critical to her growth, particularly the relationships built through accelerators.
“In PFC, our mentor Vivid Savitri-Hampton ended up becoming our co-founder. That’s the power of these programs—you meet people who change your trajectory.”
From PFC to Vogue: A Biotech Breakthrough in Mainstream Media
In December 2024, Vogue Codes named Alinta a Future Innovator finalist, a moment she describes as surreal—not just for herself, but for what it signified for technologists.
“I love that Vogue, a mainstream media outlet, is shining a light on deep tech and biotech. It’s a sign that science and technology isn’t just for people in lab coats, it’s something that’s actually relevant in our daily lives. For me, this feature was about getting people excited for what’s possible with deeptech and how we can use it to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.”
Her feature alongside other groundbreaking innovators, like Harriet Farlow, signals a shift in how science and innovation are perceived beyond just niche tech circles.
Advice for Aspiring Founders: “You’ll Never Feel Ready”
With International Women’s Day around the corner, Alinta shares a key piece of advice for those considering entrepreneurship:
“If you wait until you feel ready, you’ll never start. Just take the leap—you’ll learn as you go. And if you look back in six weeks and don’t feel a little embarrassed about your first steps, you’re not moving fast enough.”
For those on the fence about PFC or New Wave:
“There’s literally nothing to lose. Worst case? You realise startups aren’t for you. Best case? It changes your entire career—just like it did for me.”
