Meet the UNSW Founders startup revolutionising education with AI

TeachFlows co-founder Himanshu Singh pitching at the Peter Farrell Cup finals night in 2021

While most undergraduate students work part-time jobs to support themselves through study, UNSW business student Himanshu Singh has been building a cutting-edge startup.

The ambitious founder, who was previously school captain at Girraween High School and graduated with an ATAR score of 99.9, founded TeachFlows after entering the Peter Farrell Cup (PFC) in 2021.

As he searched for a pitch idea for the PFC, Himanshu zeroed in on the world he was most familiar with, one that defined 13 years of his life, the world of education.

“Education is the one pillar of society that most clearly defines the discoveries, innovations, and movements of the generations to come,” Himanshu told Indian Link. “So, I talked to teachers, principals, and well-known educators to find out core problems they’ve faced that ranged from fundamental issues of access to global education to completing simple, repetitive tasks that took up hours of teachers’ valuable time.”

The EdTech start-up was selected from 10 team pitches that qualified and went on to win first prize for the early-stage idea category, pocketing $8,000 in prize money.

“To win this competition we worked up till 2 a.m. alongside our mentor Maz Zaman, practicing our investor pitch slides and presentation as he guided me on go-to-market and startup growth strategies,” Himanshu said.

Since then, Himanshu has completed the GENE1500 Creative Entrepreneurship undergraduate course for UNSW students who want to tackle unsolved problems in the world through entrepreneurship. And now, after more than two years of development, TeachFlows has launched a suite of AI tools to change how educational resources are created.

TeachFlows products simplify the creation of learning content for teachers, making it one of the first AI-powered design tools to focus exclusively on educators.

“TeachFlows redefines how resources are created,” Himanshu tells UNSW Founders. “We believe that teachers already possess the ultimate teaching tool — their creativity — and TeachFlows harnesses that creativity in a way that is intuitive, fast, and fun. It means that, for the very first time, teachers can create new learning experiences at the speed of thought and bring more moments of joy and discovery into their classrooms.”

An Intuitive New Way to Craft Assessments

The suite introduces tools like Magical Questions, which generates questions on any topic. Magical Questions goes beyond generative chatbots by formatting the questions as a worksheet and allowing teachers to add multiple-choice, single-answer, or open-ended questions to help test students’ knowledge.

Teachers can generate a variety of engaging questions for students in just a couple of clicks, effortlessly creating thought-provoking assessments that align with their curriculum.

A Simpler Approach to Planning and Running Lessons

With the new Lesson Plans tool, TeachFlows is excited to introduce a seamless approach to lesson planning and delivery that saves teachers significant time. Lesson Plans offers a user-friendly interface that empowers educators to create and customise lesson content with ease, whether they’re teaching math, science, history, or any other subject. Unlike tools that only provide a blank or partially filled template, TeachFlows Lesson Plans fill in everything teachers need for a lesson: from the learning objectives and content to helpful links to videos, PDFs, and websites.

Teachers can enter their lesson topic and an in-depth, formatted, fully editable plan will be generated for them. TeachFlows goes beyond standard lesson planning by suggesting an array of supplementary resources and conversation starters, and it includes timers that can be used to count down each section of the lesson live in class. The platform also offers a range of customisation options, from fonts and colours to backgrounds, ensuring that lesson plans are as visually appealing as they are educational.

A Generative Tool That Sparks Ideas

Flowcharts is a dynamic, generative tool that sparks creativity and transforms the way educators visualise ideas. It empowers teachers to create interactive flowcharts that evolve with their thoughts or the ideas of their students, offering an intuitive way to keep discussions going.

With Flowcharts, teachers can effortlessly produce interactive diagrams that grow and evolve as they click. Whether they’re planning lessons, mapping out ideas, or exploring complex concepts, the user-friendly interface allows teachers to pick from various chart styles, including linear, logical, brainstorm, or circular, to bring ideas to life. It’s a game-changer for brainstorming sessions, where teachers can leverage AI-driven ideas in addition to students’ ideas — gone are the days of static whiteboards and sticky notes. The dynamic nature of Flowcharts allows for the exploration of different ideas and pathways, all within an interactive and visually appealing environment.

High-Speed Design of Worksheets and Activities

TeachFlows makes it simpler for educators to create resources they already spend significant time on. With the release of Puzzles, teachers can finally create crosswords and word searches in seconds, without watermarks, logos, or tired formatting.

The Puzzles options allow teachers to paste in their own list of words or to instantly generate words based on the topic of their choice. The tool is not only powerful but also lightning-fast: right after entering their topic or words, the entire downloadable puzzle appears with clues and an optional answer key.

Other word-based products in this release include creative writing prompts, auto-generated reading comprehension passages, and vocabulary worksheets. The math-based tools include instant algebra and arithmetic assignments, interactive time activities, and customisable area and perimeter diagrams.
