Portfolio Spotlight: 4Eyes Vision
We’re shining a light on UNSW Founders alumni and portfolio company 4Eyes Vision. The Sydney startup aims to reduce the massive burden of uncorrected refractive error in remote and developing communities (blurred vision caused by poor focus). Founded by Dr. Sarah Crowe, an experienced ophthalmologist, 4Eyes Vision participated in Heath 10x in 2020 and took out the Positive Impact Award at the inaugural UNSW Founders Awards last year.
Dr. Crowe's vision was born out of her frustration with the limited access to eye care services while working in the Solomon Islands. She saw firsthand the devastating effects of preventable blindness on individuals and their families, and she knew that something needed to be done. One billion people worldwide have poor vision simply because they have no access to affordable glasses. The majority of people affected are in remote and developing communities and this is for 3 reasons: lack of professional services to test for prescription, cost, and geographic isolation.
Pssst…APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN for our 10x Accelerator programs. This year we have four streams: All Industries, Health, SynBio, and Defence. You can find out more information here.
With the help of her team, Dr. Crowe developed a mobile testing device kit, made up of our patented wheel, a supply of frame, and lens strengths we provide eye testing and dispense on-the-spot glasses, to hospitals, clinics, schools, community groups, businesses and individual business’s. One of their portable kits services 200 people, delivering an eye test and glasses dispensed in 25 minutes.
The 4Eyes Vision team is made up of experienced ophthalmologists, optometrists, and support staff who are dedicated to providing the highest level of care to patients. They work closely with local healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive the best possible care, regardless of their location.
Dr. Crowe is an ophthalmic surgeon with a wealth of experience. She has a special interest in Cataract Surgery using multifocal intraocular lenses and oculoplastic. Originally from Canada, Dr. Crowe obtained her first-degree BSc (First Class Hons) from Mt Allison University, Canada. This included an Honours year on a Rotary Scholarship at St Andrews University in Scotland. She was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for the prestigious Oxford University where she completed a doctorate in molecular biology and has been in private general practice since 2000.
